8 Slot Memory Card Reader

  • In theory, the read & write speed of a memory card via a card reader is faster than a card that is connected via the device card slot. And, the card reader works reliably relatively. Besides, the card reader has various slots to support more card sizes. If your computer doesn’t have card slots, an SD card reader is especially necessary.

Alternatively known as a media card reader, a card reader is a hardware device for reading and writing data on a memory card such as a multimedia card. Some card readers only have one card slot, and some have multiple card slots for different cards and media. In the picture below, you can see an example of a USB media card reader from Kingston. This card reader has a slot for miniSD, MicroSD, SD/MMC, MMCmicro, CF/MD, M2, and MS/DUO cards. Media card readers mostly find use for those who want to download information from expanded storage on a smartphone, or memory from a digital camera.

Memory card readers are also built into some printers, laptops, and can be put in a 5 1/4' or 3 1/2' drive bay in desktop computers. The picture (shown right) is a 3 1/2' drive bay media card reader for a desktop computer.

These Secure Digital, microSD, CompactFlash, XQD and CFast card reader reviews include read and write speed tests using several memory cards. Most readers support USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 for maximum transfer speed. USB 3.0 is capable of up to 500 MB/s speed. USB 3.1 is capable of up to 5 or 10 GB/s. If you have a computer with only USB 2.0, USB 3.0 card readers are backwards compatible but limited to 35MB/s which is the maximum speed possible with USB 2.0. In most desktop computers it is possible to upgrade to USB 3.0 by adding a PCI-e USB 3.0 expansion card such as the Silverstone Tek EC04-P.

The most common type of USB port is the standard USB Type-A. A newer standard USB Type-C (or USB-C) is finding its way onto laptops and other devices. This port requires a special connector. Few USB card readers are available with USB-C connectors, but more are on the way.
